We measured 5′-nucleotidase (5-NT) in sera of 34-40 ewes with brucellosis, treated with or without 25 mg/kg streptomycin IM every 48 hours for 16 days. Controls (n=30) consisted of normal sheep. 5-NT catalyzes 5′-ribonucleotides to the corresponding phosphate and ribonucleoside and plays an important role in adenosine metabolism in healthy sheep. Brucellosis was diagnosed by Rose–bengal and 2- mercaptoethanol tests and 5-NT as described by Wood and Williams (2001). Compared with controls (13.8 ± 3.31 IU/L) we found highly significant (P < 0.001) increases in 5-NT in ewes with brucellosis (46.4 ± 3.25 IU/L) but less (P < 0.05) in those given streptomycin (21.7 ± 2.80 UI/L). There were no differences in total serum protein between any group. Results suggest that 5′-NT may reflect inflammatory status in ewes with brucellosis.
